Transportation
Program
Over two-thirds of California's air pollution comes
from mobile sources such as cars, trucks, buses, planes and marine
vessels. For this reason the Coalition for Clean Air spends much
of its time advocating for more stringent controls on vehicle emissions
and the development and implementation of cleaner transportation
using electric, hybrid, and hydrogen technology.
CCA is one of the leading environmental groups in California advocating
for a transition away from petroleum-based fuels to cleaner alternatives.
Our efforts include education on the health hazards associated
with diesel exhaust, advocacy for regulatory reform by local, state
and
federal agencies, and promotion of incentives for the development
and purchase of cleaner technologies.
We sponsored landmark global warming legislation in 2002 that will
allow California to be the first state to directly regulate vehicle
emissions that contribute to climate change. AB 1493, carried
by Assembly Member Fran Pavley, (D-Agoura Hills), directs California's
Air Resources Board to develop regulations that would achieve
the
maximum feasible reductions of greenhouse gas emissions from
vehicles sold beginning in 2009. We continue to work hard to ensure
successful
implementation of the law.
One of our current campaigns is focused on the enormous amounts
of pollution created at marine ports. The ports of Los Angeles
and Long
Beach are the largest fixed source of air pollution in the
South Coast Air Basin, with especially high levels of air toxics
derived
from diesel sources.
| A container
ship that idles at dock emits roughly the amount of diesel
pollution as a diesel truck would traveling 70,000 miles
- the approximate distance of three trips around our planet.
For every 24 hour period a ship sits idle at our docks unloading
cargo, its engines can release more than one ton of smog-forming
compounds into our region's air. |
We also focus on other major sources of diesel, such as distribution
centers, airports and rail yard facilities. For more details on the
impact diesel has on our air quality, download one of our reports.
