Coalition for Clean Air Announces New President and CEO

The Coalition for Clean Air (CCA) announced Alberto B. Mendoza as its new President and CEO today. Mendoza, of Los Angeles, brings more than 13 years experience in non-profit leadership, management and fundraising at a variety of community-focused organizations in California. He most recently served as the Southern California regional director of Drug Policy Alliance, a national advocacy organization headquartered in New York.

During the last five years, Mendoza built Drug Policy Alliance's regional office from a tiny operation into a $2.2 million organization with seven staff members. In addition to his staff and financial management and fundraising experience, Mendoza has extensive experience working with local and state elected officials on policy.

"Alberto is a talented and charismatic nonprofit professional with visionary leadership skills," said Lisa Rawlins, chairwoman of the Coalition for Clean Air board. "We're confident his management background and hands-on experience bringing together diverse communities to effect social change will help the Coalition fulfill its mission of restoring clean, healthy air to all of California and strengthening the environmental movement."

Mendoza said he looks forward to building on the Coalition's legacy. "The Coalition for Clean Air's vision of clean, healthy air for all Californians fits with my passion for helping to empower communities to improve quality of life for us all," he said.

As part of an organizational assessment that began a year ago, Tim Carmichael, who has served as CCA's president and CEO for 8 ½ years, decided he wanted to focus his time on advocacy. Carmichael's new title will be Senior Director of Policy.

"I am looking forward to transitioning into a position that allows me to focus on the part of my work that I enjoy the most," Carmichael said. "Fortunately, the CCA board was willing to support this shift."

Since the 1970s, CCA has fought air pollution by spearheading California's original Smog Check program, requiring the state to follow federal law and enforce the Clean Air Act, and convincing the state's largest city, Los Angeles, to invest in clean, renewable energy such as solar and wind power instead of dirty coal.

As CCA continues this work, it is also committed to growing the environmental movement in California by reaching out to new constituents that reflect the state's broad diversity.

Mendoza and Carmichael assume their new positions on June 11.
